What it is

The follow-up to one of the highest-scoring one-piece alloys anyone has reviewed. A ring-free AZR alloy barrel, machined to what Marucci calls its tightest production tolerances so the flex lands exactly where it stretches the sweet spot down the barrel. A TFX end cap adds give on end-of-barrel contact, and the third-generation AV3 damper in the handle keeps one-piece sting under control.

How it plays

The case for this bat is unglamorous and strong. It is hot from the first swing and stays that way — alloy never needs a break-in and never goes dead. It is as durable as anything in the category. Marucci’s warranty operation actually answers, which is not true of everyone in this group. And the swing weight sits at the light end of the BBCOR range, so a hitter gets the barrel through the zone.

For a program in New England, that last point compounds: alloy does not care that it is 41 degrees in the first week of April. A composite bat does.

What to watch

Bottom line The safest $350 in the category and the best default recommendation for a high school hitter. If a player doesn’t know what he wants yet, this is the bat to hand him. It is also the obvious choice for a shared team bag.
