A field guide to propylene glycol and its relatives on the hand-lotion shelf: what they do, why they're in nearly everything, and what actually keeps skin from drying out.

This started in a natural-foods body-care aisle, where a staff member and I read the backs of more than a dozen products. Every one carried a glycol of some kind, and none of the labels said why. This is the answer.

The short answer

  • It isn't poison. Propylene glycol is approved as a food ingredient, and most people put it on their skin without trouble.
  • It isn't necessary. Good hand creams exist without it, and several other ingredients do its jobs.
  • It isn't what keeps your hands soft. Its main work in the bottle serves the manufacturer. The ingredients that stop dry skin are different ones, and you can learn to spot them.

Why it's on the wing and in the bottle

Propylene glycol (on a label, propylene glycol; to a chemist, 1,2-propanediol) is a clear, slightly syrupy liquid. It mixes completely with water and lowers the temperature at which that water freezes. That single property explains most of where you find it.

At airports, it's the main ingredient in the fluid sprayed on planes before winter takeoffs. Many airports switched to it from ethylene glycol, the older and more toxic antifreeze, though ethylene glycol is still used in some places. "Less toxic" isn't the same as harmless, though. As microbes break propylene glycol down in streams, they use up the water's oxygen. A long-term study of runoff at Milwaukee's airport, covering 2005 to 2022, found that propylene glycol from aircraft deicers accounted for at least half of the oxygen demand in the runoff. The EPA has regulated airport deicing discharges under 40 CFR Part 449 since 2012.

In a hand lotion, the same property protects the product in a February delivery truck. That job is for the product, not your hands.

Cosmetic chemists call this freeze-thaw stability: the emulsion doesn't separate after freezing and thawing, or after baking in a summer warehouse. One widely used ingredient reference lists that as propylene glycol's usual main job in cosmetics, typically at under 2 percent of the formula.

The propylene glycol in a lotion is a purified grade, often pharmaceutical (USP) grade, not deicing fluid. The molecule is the same; the purity and the additives are not. The comparison is useful because it shows what the ingredient is for, not because the lotion is dangerous.

What it's actually doing in the bottle

Propylene glycol earns its place by doing several jobs at once, cheaply. Most of them serve the product rather than the person using it.

Keeps the emulsion stable in cold and heat For the product
Lotion is oil and water forced to stay mixed. Freezing and heat both try to split them apart. A glycol in the water side keeps it from icing up and separating.
Dissolves things that won't mix into water For the product
Fragrance oils, plant extracts, and some active ingredients need a carrier before they'll blend in evenly. Glycols are good solvents.
Helps the preservatives work For the product
Anything made with water will grow mold and bacteria without a preservative. Glycols boost preservatives, which can let a formula use less of the conventional preservative.
Costs less For the product
Formulators rate propylene glycol as cheaper than glycerin, its main alternative.
Opens the skin's outer layer Depends what's riding along
Propylene glycol is a known penetration enhancer. It loosens the skin's outer barrier so other ingredients travel deeper. Drug makers use it for exactly this. In a lotion, it means whatever else is in the formula, including fragrance, gets further in. More on this under "Safe".
Attracts water to the skin For you, partly
This is the job printed on the marketing: a humectant, or water magnet. It's real, but it's the weakest part of the story. The next section explains why.

The moisture problem

Moisturizing takes two things: something to attract water, and something to hold it in. Propylene glycol only does the first. A water magnet pulls water from wherever there's the most of it. On a humid day, that's the air. In a heated house in January, it's the skin underneath.

At high humidity (roughly 70 to 80 percent and up), the magnet pulls water in from the air. This is when humectants work as advertised.

A thin layer of petrolatum, dimethicone, lanolin, beeswax, or a butter holds the water in the outer skin, where you feel it.

This isn't a fringe view. StatPearls, a clinical reference published on the National Library of Medicine's bookshelf, says humectants hydrate skin when humidity is above 70 percent, but more commonly pull water from the deeper layers. Dermatology texts describe the same effect in low humidity: without a seal, a humectant can add to water loss and make dryness worse.

The seal is the part that works. Petrolatum, the classic example, cuts water loss through the skin by nearly 99 percent, according to the same reference.

Even for the water-magnet job, propylene glycol isn't the strongest choice. Glycerin, a slightly larger cousin, holds more water. At 50 percent humidity glycerin absorbs roughly 25 percent of its own weight in water, versus about 20 percent for propylene glycol. Formulator guides recommend glycerin when lasting hydration matters, and propylene glycol when solvency, penetration, or cost matters.

What keeps hands from drying

Look for glycerin plus a seal ingredient (petrolatum, dimethicone, lanolin, beeswax, shea or cocoa butter) near the top of the list. Put it on while hands are still slightly damp from washing, so there's water to hold in. Reapply after each wash. A glycol somewhere in the list won't hurt most people, but it isn't doing the heavy lifting.

The family on the shelf

If a label doesn't say "propylene glycol," it will often say one of these instead. They're different molecules with different safety records, but many do overlapping jobs. Swapping one for another changes the name on the label more than it changes what the bottle needs.

Stability, solvent, preservative help, some water attraction.

Propylene Glycolalso 1,2-propanediol, PG

The original. Made from propylene (a petroleum product) or from glycerin. The federal food regulation that approves it notes that it doesn't occur in nature. Named the 2018 Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society; see Allergy.

Propanediolalso 1,3-propanediol, often "corn-derived"

The natural-aisle favorite. Commonly made by fermenting corn sugar, so it can be marketed as plant-based. It's a different arrangement of the same atoms as propylene glycol, and suppliers sell it for the same jobs: lowering the freezing point, stabilizing through freeze and heat, dissolving hard-to-dissolve ingredients, and boosting preservatives.

Butylene Glycolalso 1,3-butanediol

A common substitute with a lighter, less sticky feel. Same toolkit: solvent, humectant, stabilizer. Allergy to it is uncommon but has been reported.

Pentylene Glycolalso 1,2-pentanediol

A humectant that also has its own antimicrobial effect, so it lets a brand lean less on conventional preservatives. Popular in "preservative-free" or "clean" positioning.

Preservative helpers

Mostly there to keep the product from spoiling.

Caprylyl Glycolalso 1,2-octanediol

A longer-chain glycol used mainly to boost preservatives, often paired with phenoxyethanol or ethylhexylglycerin. Adds a little skin conditioning.

1,2-Hexanedioland hexylene glycol, a different six-carbon glycol

Solvent and preservative booster. Hexylene glycol, a separate molecule with similar uses, shows up more in cleansers than in leave-on creams.

Ethylhexylglycerinrelated to glycerin

Not a glycol by name, but it plays on the same team: a preservative booster that's chemically related to glycerin. Often appears right after phenoxyethanol.

Built from propylene glycol

The PG is chemically bound into a bigger molecule that behaves differently.

PPG-followed by a number, e.g. PPG-15 Stearyl Ether

Polypropylene glycols: chains built from repeating propylene glycol units, often attached to a fatty part. They act as emollients and solvents. The number is the chain length.

Propylene Glycol Stearatealso Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Laurate

Propylene glycol esters. The glycol is joined to a fatty acid, making an oily emollient or emulsifier. These behave like oils, not like free propylene glycol, though some also enhance penetration.

Dipropylene Glycoloften hidden inside "Fragrance"

A standard solvent for fragrance oils. Because fragrance can be listed as a single word, a glycol that's part of the fragrance mix may be in the bottle without its own line on the label.

Often confused

Similar-sounding, different families.

Glycerinalso glycerol, glycerine, vegetable glycerin

Not a glycol. It has three water-grabbing groups instead of two, one reason it holds more water. It's the benchmark humectant, and glycerol also occurs naturally in skin. If you want a water magnet, this is the one to look for.

PEG-followed by a number, e.g. PEG-100 Stearate

Polyethylene glycols, made from ethylene oxide rather than propylene oxide. A separate family used mainly as emulsifiers. Worth knowing so you don't lump them in with PPGs.

Check a label

Paste or type any ingredient list. The checker marks glycol-family ingredients, water magnets, seal ingredients, and fragrance, and tells you where the first seal ingredient falls. It runs entirely on this page; nothing is sent anywhere.

    The checker recognizes common ingredients, not every possible name, so an unmarked line isn't proof of absence. Order tells you what's used most, but only down to the 1 percent line. Below 1 percent, ingredients can be listed in any order, and labels don't mark where that line falls.

    The allergy question

    In 2018 the American Contact Dermatitis Society named propylene glycol its Allergen of the Year. The award doesn't mean an ingredient is the most dangerous. It's meant to draw attention to allergens that are common, underrecognized, or showing up in new places.

    0.8–3.5%of patients patch-tested react to it, depending on the test concentration.
    53.8%of identified sources in reacting patients were personal-care products like creams and lotions (North American patch-test data, 1996 to 2006).
    27.5%of hand sanitizers used in U.S. hospitals contained it, in a 2021 ingredient study.

    Reactions show up as redness, itching, or rash where the product goes. Hands are a particular concern: skin that's already cracked from washing and sanitizer is more easily irritated, and a lotion bought to soothe it can keep the problem going.

    The other side, fairly stated. A 2023 toxicology review points out that propylene glycol has tested negative in every animal test for skin allergy, and argues the award was about awareness rather than strength as an allergen. The report announcing the award itself describes it as both a weak allergen and an irritant, which makes patch-test results hard to read.

    The fair summary: most people won't react. A meaningful minority will. If someone's hands keep getting worse with lotion, a glycol is one of several things worth ruling out, and a dermatologist can patch test for it.

    What "safe" means here

    You'll often read that the FDA calls propylene glycol "generally recognized as safe." That's true, but it's a food designation. It appears in the federal list of direct food substances, with limits by food category.

    Cosmetics work differently. The FDA doesn't approve cosmetic products or their ingredients before they go on sale, with the exception of some color additives. The 2022 Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act added facility registration, product listing, adverse-event reporting, and recall authority, but it still didn't create pre-market approval. Only a short list of ingredients is banned or restricted in U.S. cosmetics.

    The main safety review for cosmetic ingredients comes from the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, an expert panel funded by the cosmetics industry's trade association, the Personal Care Products Council. The CIR says its reviews are independent of the industry. It has found propylene glycol safe as used, originally setting a limit of 50 percent of a formula.

    The same panel added a caution most shoppers never see: propylene glycol can help other ingredients through the skin.

    The panel noted that some cosmetic ingredients are considered safe precisely because they don't penetrate skin, and that if propylene glycol helps them penetrate, the two shouldn't be combined. That puts the responsibility on each formulator to check what the glycol is carrying. There's no public checklist a shopper can use to confirm it was done.

    Why the list is so long

    A basic, effective hand cream needs very few ingredients: water, an oil or butter, a seal, glycerin, something to keep them mixed, and a preservative. Everything past that solves a manufacturing problem or supports a marketing claim.

    Emulsifiers
    Keep oil and water from separating. Examples: Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Polysorbate 60.
    Preservatives and boosters
    Water feeds microbes, and a pump bottle gets touched daily. Examples: Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Benzoate.
    Chelators
    Tie up trace metals that break the formula down. Examples: Sodium Phytate, Disodium EDTA.
    Antioxidants
    Keep the oils from going rancid. Example: Tocopherol (vitamin E).
    Thickeners and pH adjusters
    Set the texture and acidity. Examples: Xanthan Gum, Carbomer, Citric Acid.
    Fragrance and its solvent
    Scent, often carried by a glycol that doesn't get its own line.
    Claims ingredients
    Botanicals and vitamins added in tiny amounts so the front of the bottle can mention them. The trade term for this is "fairy dusting."

    Why familiar things sound like chemicals

    Labels use a standardized international naming system (INCI), which often uses Latin plant names. A few translations:

    The ordering rule matters too. Ingredients above 1 percent must be listed from most to least. Below 1 percent, any order is allowed. The long tail of impressive-sounding extracts is often the smallest part of the bottle.

    Glycols in hand lotion: quick facts

    • Propylene glycol and its relatives (propanediol, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, caprylyl glycol) do behind-the-scenes jobs: keeping lotion stable in cold and heat, dissolving fragrance, and helping preservatives work.
    • They're mild water magnets. In dry winter air, a water magnet without a seal can pull water out of skin.
    • What keeps hands from drying: glycerin plus a seal (petrolatum, dimethicone, lanolin, beeswax, shea or cocoa butter), applied to damp hands.
    • "Plant-based" propanediol is a different molecule doing the same jobs as propylene glycol.
    • Propylene glycol was the American Contact Dermatitis Society's 2018 Allergen of the Year. Most people tolerate it; some don't. Chapped hands are the most vulnerable.
