On June 18, 2004, four men gathered at Shea Stadium in New York. Johnny Bench. Yogi Berra. Carlton Fisk. Gary Carter. They were there to honor Mike Piazza, who had just broken Fisk's all-time record for career home runs by a catcher. The ceremony lasted less than an hour. What it represented lasted a generation.
Every man on that field was a Hall of Famer. Together their career home run totals as primary catchers read like a leaderboard from a different sport: Piazza 427, Bench 389, Fisk 376, Berra 358, Carter 324. Their collective OPS+, adjusted for park and era, averaged well above 120 — a number that would make most corner outfielders envious, let alone catchers. And that afternoon at Shea stood as an accidental farewell: the last time that many dominant offensive catchers would gather in the same place, because the game was already in the process of making sure they wouldn't be replaced.
To understand what was lost, start with what existed. The career offensive leaderboard for catchers, by OPS+ (minimum 5,000 plate appearances as primary catcher), per Baseball-Reference and CBS Sports, reads as follows:

Piazza's career OPS+ of 142 isn't just the best ever for a catcher — it's elite by any positional standard. His single-best season, 1997 with the Dodgers, produced a 185 OPS+ with a .362 average, 40 home runs, and a 1.070 OPS — the highest single-season OPS ever recorded by a primary catcher, per ESPN. Bench in 1970 hit 45 home runs and led the entire National League in home runs and RBIs at age 22. Campanella, in just ten major league seasons cut short by segregation's injustice and a car accident, won three NL MVP awards.
These were not catcher-adjusted numbers. These were just great baseball numbers, any position, any era.

Any serious examination of catching history runs through the Society for American Baseball Research. SABR — whose acronym gave the field of sabermetrics its very name when Bill James coined the term in 1980 — has been the institutional home of rigorous catcher analysis for decades. Its Baseball Research Journal has published composite ranking methodologies, equipment evolution studies, and multi-variable assessments of the position that go far beyond traditional stats.
SABR researcher Chuck Rosciam, writing in the Summer 2009 Baseball Research Journal, developed a composite ranking system for evaluating great catchers that merits attention here because it reveals something important: the metrics that define catching greatness are deeply split between offense and defense, and no single number captures both.
Rosciam's methodology merged ten measures — five offensive (OBP, SLG, adjusted batting runs, runs created per game, win shares) and five defensive (average games caught, assists per game, errors per game, range, throwing) — into a single composite value, normalizing all of them against league averages for the era in which each catcher played. The result is an era-adjusted portrait of overall catching value.
From 1,693 career catchers in MLB history, Rosciam identified 166 who met the threshold of 800+ career games caught with catching accounting for more than 50% of games played — roughly ten years as a starting catcher. His composite scoring used z-scores to normalize ten disparate metrics onto a common scale, then combined them into a single value.
Key finding: across 50 "top-five" slots spanning the ten individual categories, 36 different catchers appeared — demonstrating that no single measure of offense or defense captures the whole picture. Mickey Cochrane appeared in more individual top-fives than Yogi Berra, yet Berra's composite score remained competitive due to superior postseason value and career longevity.
The study also confirmed what the raw stats suggest: the most valuable catchers in history were those who could contribute meaningfully on both sides — and that group, viewed across the entire span of MLB history, is remarkably small.
What Rosciam's work illuminates for our purposes is that the question "where have all the hitting catchers gone?" is partly a question about the composite value equation. When teams began quantifying defensive value at the catching position with precision — first through caught-stealing rates, then through pitch framing, and now through the ABS challenge system — the offensive side of the ledger became easier to rationalize away. If a catcher is worth +18 runs defensively, you can absorb a 78 wRC+ at the plate and still come out ahead in the WAR calculation.
Bill James, the founder of sabermetrics and a co-founder of what is now Sports Info Solutions, spent decades asking precisely this kind of question: how do you properly value every contribution a catcher makes, and what gets undervalued in the process? His work, and the ecosystem it spawned through SABR, FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus, and SIS, created the analytical framework that — ironically — made it easier for teams to deprioritize the very hitting catchers James would have celebrated.

The decline in catcher offense is documented at both the individual and the league-wide level. FanGraphs data tracked the position's wRC+ across the modern era. For most of the 1990s and 2000s, catchers ran roughly 15 points below the 100 league average — below average, but acceptably so given the physical toll of the position. The gap widened through the 2010s as framing metrics arrived and teams began actively choosing receivers over bats.

The modern landscape heading into 2025 illustrated the shift starkly. Patrick Bailey of San Francisco had established himself as arguably the best defensive catcher in baseball — leading all players in Fielding Run Value (+22) in 2024 per FanGraphs — while posting a career 79 wRC+. Below average. Celebrated. Adley Rutschman was a five-win player in each of his first two full seasons, then his bat vanished after June 2024, finishing as a replacement-level hitter. William Contreras — the consensus best offensive catcher in baseball entering 2025 — played most of the year with a fractured left middle finger, finished .260/.355/.399 with a .754 OPS, and was described in coverage as a down year.
That's the landscape. The best offensive bat at the position posted a .754 OPS while injured. The second-most-praised was celebrated primarily for his glove. A SABR article from an earlier era noted: "There was a time when catchers didn't have to hit, when the three basics were receiving, throwing, and blocking. If you could do those things at a high standard, you had a good chance to make the big leagues." The game had, by 2024, quietly returned to that sensibility.

Before analytics changed the calculus, physics was already doing the same work more slowly. Catching is the most physically punishing job in professional sports. Not close to the most punishing. The most. And that fact — stubborn, anatomical, unyielding — is the hidden force behind the disappearance of the hitting catcher. Because the players most likely to hit at the major league level are often the same players most likely to be saved from catching before the toll gets paid in full.
Consider what the position actually demands. A starting catcher squats into his stance an average of 120 times per game — every pitch, down and up, down and up — placing compressive load on the knee joints that no other position generates in the same repetitive, low-angle way. The crouching position exposes the medial side of the knee directly to the path of foul tips. A catcher's blocking motion requires dropping from the crouch to both knees and returning to ready position within a fraction of a second. Multiply that motion by 140 games, by ten seasons, and you have a prescription for meniscal damage, patellar tendinitis, cartilage erosion, and the kind of cumulative knee degradation that orthopedic surgeons at Johns Hopkins and the military medical system have documented in peer-reviewed literature.
A study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, querying MLB's Electronic Baseball Information System for all catcher injuries from 2001–2010, found 134 injuries resulting in 6,801 days lost — an average of 50.8 days on the disabled list per injury. Of those 134 injuries, only 20 were collision injuries. The remaining 114 occurred without any contact with a runner. The most common injury locations were the leg (28%), knee and shoulder (23% each). Knee injuries required the longest average recovery times of the non-collision variety.
A larger study covering 2011–2019 seasons, using MLB's Health and Injury Tracking System database and encompassing 112,405 injuries across both major and minor leagues, confirmed that catchers sustained more head/neck injuries than expected for their position — driven primarily by foul tips, not collisions. Catchers were also the most likely position players to require lower-leg surgery, per the Sports Medicine literature on lower extremity injuries in baseball.
An additional study measuring concussion rates found that on any given day during the 2013 season, roughly 15% of all MLB catchers were on the concussion disabled list. That staggering figure prompted MLB to consult with the Mayo Clinic in multiple individual cases, including Joe Mauer's.
The concussion problem alone has re-routed careers at the highest level. Foul tips — not the dramatic home plate collisions that rule 7.13 was designed to eliminate — are the primary driver. A catcher receives pitches at 90-plus miles per hour, absorbs tipped balls off the mask at odd angles, and does so for three hours without warning. The cumulative neurological exposure is unlike anything any other position player experiences.
No case illustrates the toll more clearly than Joe Mauer. He was the best offensive catcher in baseball for a decade — hitting .323 with an .873 OPS over ten seasons at the position, winning three batting titles, six All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, five Silver Sluggers, and the 2009 AL MVP. Among all catchers through age 30, his career WAR ranked sixth in MLB history behind only Bench, Carter, Ivan Rodriguez, Joe Torre, and Ted Simmons. And then on August 19, 2013, a foul tip struck his mask. The Twins consulted with the Mayo Clinic. The doctors were unambiguous. Mauer moved to first base at age 30 and never caught again.

Mauer's case is the most prominent, but the pattern is systemic and long-standing. Johnny Bench — perhaps the most complete catcher in history — made 103 starts at third base in 1982 when injuries forced him away from behind the plate. He had 1,627 career starts as a catcher and 182 at third. Carlton Fisk played 29 games in right field at age 38 when the White Sox tried to protect him; he pushed back, returned to catching, and was still squatting at 43 — a tribute to stubbornness as much as durability. Yogi Berra made 246 career outfield starts alongside his 1,641 at catcher. The position takes everyone eventually.
What makes the body-and-toll argument so directly relevant to this piece is not just the catchers who got hurt. It's the catchers who were moved before they ever had the chance to develop as hitters. The game has a long, under-examined history of looking at a prospect with an exceptional bat and making a deliberate decision: he's too good to leave behind the plate.

The aggregate of that table is staggering. These are not marginal players who washed out of catching. Craig Biggio is in the Hall of Fame. Joey Votto accumulated 64.3 career WAR. Josh Donaldson won an MVP award. Dale Murphy won two. Bryce Harper was the consensus best player in the National League for years running. Every one of them was identified as a catcher first — and every one of them was moved because someone in a position of authority decided the body was too valuable, or the bat too good, to leave behind the plate.
The Nationals' explanation for moving Harper in 2010 may be the most explicit articulation of this logic ever put on record. General Manager Mike Rizzo said it directly at the draft table: "We're going to take the rigor and the pressures of learning the position, the difficult position of catcher, away from him, and really let him concentrate on the offensive part of the game." There it is. The position itself — its difficulty, its physical demands, its learning curve — was treated as an obstacle between a talent and his bat. The solution was to remove the position.
Multiply that decision by every draft class across thirty years, and you begin to understand one of the deeper structural reasons why hitting catchers are rare. It is not only that the position destroys bodies. It is that the game's development infrastructure has, with increasing intentionality, prevented the best hitters from staying there long enough to find out.

To understand why the hitting catcher disappeared, you have to understand pitch framing — and how its discovery by the analytical community in the early 2010s permanently changed what teams drafted, developed, and deployed behind the plate.
Pitch framing is the ability to receive a borderline pitch in a way that influences the umpire to call it a strike. In the PITCHf/x era, researchers at Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs, and elsewhere were finally able to quantify this skill in runs saved. The differences were enormous. The best framers were worth 20-plus runs above average per season — roughly two wins in the standings — entirely from how they caught the ball, before a single at-bat.
Sports Info Solutions (SIS), co-founded by analytics pioneers Bill James and John Dewan, became a primary driver of defensive metrics at the catching position through its Strike Zone Runs Saved metric, which measures pitch framing value with industry-leading precision. The Fielding Bible, SIS's flagship defensive publication, began tracking and ranking catchers on framing before most teams even had the infrastructure to act on the data.
Per FanGraphs framing run analysis, the gap between the best and worst framers in baseball was worth approximately 25–30 runs per season — roughly 2.5 to 3 wins. Buster Posey led all catchers in framing RAA (runs above average) at +26.8 in peak framing years. Yasmani Grandal was +24.1. By contrast, Salvador Perez — one of the most beloved catchers in the game — graded out as one of the worst framers, consistently negative in Strike Zone Runs Saved despite his superb relationship with his pitching staff and exceptional work in every other facet of catching.
The lesson teams drew was logical and swift: a catcher who could manufacture called strikes was adding compounding defensive value that showed up in WAR. A catcher who couldn't — regardless of how well he hit — was costing his team real runs.
The consequences played out in drafting, development, and roster construction. Teams began targeting framers explicitly. The Sacramento sabermetric ecosystem — Rays, Pirates, early-analytics clubs — built their catching pipelines around receiving grades. A generation of catchers was developed with framing as the primary skill, bat as secondary. Patrick Bailey is the clearest modern example: the best framer in baseball, leading all players in Fielding Run Value in 2024, celebrated on draft boards and in the analytics community despite hitting below the league average for his career.

Here is where the story gets genuinely current — and where the sources that informed this piece converge on something the broader baseball media has not yet fully absorbed.
The Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system is now operating at the major league level in 2026. And its arrival is already producing a finding that Sports Info Solutions documented in May 2026 with data that cuts right to the heart of this piece: bad pitch framers are leading the league in ABS challenge success.
In a SIS research piece published May 28, 2026, analyst Mark Simon found that catchers with the worst Strike Zone Runs Saved totals — Salvador Perez (–32 since 2022), Tyler Stephenson (–27), Shea Langeliers (–36) — were among the most successful in getting borderline calls overturned through the challenge system. The logic: a catcher who consistently loses borderline strikes to the umpire is aware of which pitches he's losing, and can challenge them strategically. Stephenson hit a streak of 9 consecutive successful challenges, all on pitches clipping the edge of the zone.

SIS also noted a critical methodological shift: when a pitch is challenged under ABS, it is excluded entirely from framing evaluation. The call is determined by technology, not by the catcher's receiving skill. This means that as ABS usage grows, the universe of pitches on which framing can be measured and valued shrinks.
The implication for our story is significant. The framing revolution that deprioritized the hitting catcher was powered by a skill — influencing human umpires on borderline pitches — that is now being systematically removed from the game. As the FanGraphs 2026 positional power rankings noted: "None of us knows exactly how the ABS challenge system will affect the way they go about their job, but all of us will be paying close attention."
If framing value is diminished or eliminated by automated ball-strike technology, teams must find catcher value elsewhere. The most logical alternative source: offense. A catcher who hits 110 wRC+ provides value independent of umpire interaction. A catcher who provides +20 framing runs in a world where framing is fully automated provides exactly zero from that skill.
This doesn't mean the transition happens overnight. The challenge system is not a full robot ump — it's a hybrid, where managers and catchers can challenge calls. But the directional pressure is clear. The game is moving toward removing the skill that displaced the hitting catcher. Whether it moves fast enough to change how the next generation of catchers is developed is the open question.

Into this environment — framing-first, bat-optional, analytically deprioritized at offense — arrived Cal Raleigh's 2025 season. What he produced is not just unprecedented for a catcher. It barely has context anywhere in the history of the sport.
Sixty home runs obliterated the previous catcher record of 48, set by Salvador Perez in 2021, which itself had finally broken Johnny Bench's 55-year-old mark of 45 from 1970. Raleigh didn't edge the record — he beat it by twelve. His 9.1 fWAR ranked second in all of baseball to Aaron Judge's 10.1, per FanGraphs, making the 2025 AL MVP race one of the most compelling in memory. Raleigh became the seventh player in MLB history to hit 60 home runs in a single season — joining Ruth, Maris, McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, and Judge — and the first switch-hitter to surpass Mickey Mantle's 54 from 1961.

The historical context matters. Since the genesis of modern Major League Baseball in 1901, only two catchers had ever led the majors in home runs: Johnny Bench in 1970 and 1972. Cal Raleigh did it again in 2025, 53 years after Bench's second title. The Sports Analytics Group at Berkeley, studying the season afterward, noted that Raleigh's 2025 ISO (Isolated Power, measuring extra-base hit production) "stands out far above the rest" of any catcher season from 1990 to 2025, and that "this level of isolated power is rare for any player to achieve, but for a full-time catcher, it's remarkable."
The Mariners' official release on his Silver Slugger Award — his first after being a finalist four straight years — placed him in remarkable company: "Among all qualified catchers in 2025, Raleigh ranked 1st in games played, plate appearances (705), runs, home runs, RBI, walks, OBP, SLG and OPS." He also became just the fourth catcher in MLB history with three 30-home-run seasons, per RotoWire.

Here is where the story becomes genuinely complicated — and where honest reckoning matters more than a clean narrative.
Raleigh's 2025 season did not prove that the hitting catcher is back. It proved how extraordinarily rare one still is. His 60 home runs were singular enough that they land in the same sentence as Ruth and Maris. They broke records that had stood for 55 years. They finished second in AL MVP voting. And they didn't change the way teams draft catchers.
The FanGraphs 2026 Positional Power Rankings for catcher — the most comprehensive available — tell the story directly. At the top: Raleigh "in his own stratosphere." Then William Contreras, recovering from fractured-finger surgery. Then Patrick Bailey, "one-tooling his way to the top tier" on the strength of his receiving. The tier below is crowded with framing-first backstops, prospects evaluated primarily on receiving grades, and veterans aging off their offensive contributions.

The physical reality beneath the analytics is also worth stating plainly. Catching is the most physically destructive job in professional sports. It destroys knees, taxes the lower back, and asks a human body to spend 140 games a year in a posture that nature never intended. The players who can endure that and still arrive at the plate with the energy to drive a baseball 400 feet are genuinely rare. They always were. What changed is that teams stopped needing them to — because framing gave them a way to rationalize the absence.
What the ABS challenge data from SIS tells us is that the game is in transition. As pitch-challenging technology matures and human framing value erodes, the defensive calculus will shift. A catcher who posts +15 framing runs in a full-automation world posts zero from that skill. The teams that built their catching pipelines around framing over the past fifteen years may find themselves caught short.
Whether that transition happens fast enough to resurrect the hitting catcher as a development priority — the way teams now develop contact hitters and launch-angle power — is the unresolved question. Raleigh exists partly because he was an outlier who developed power organically, not because an organization set out to build the next Mike Piazza.
Go back to that June afternoon at Shea Stadium in 2004. Bench. Berra. Fisk. Carter. Standing together to honor Piazza. Four Hall of Famers, the last gathering of its kind. But the ABS challenge data says the ground is shifting. The question is whether the game will rebuild the hitting catcher from intent — or wait for another Raleigh to arrive by accident.
